While heart rate, lung capacity, and blood vessel performance are typically measured, the muscle component often gets overlooked. Ok, first some basics: during our very first lesson in exercise physiology we learned about the Fick principle.

Fick stated that VO2max equals the amount of blood pumped per heart beat at maximum heart rate times the amount of oxygen the working muscles can extract from the blood passing through them.

WODSCIENCE THRESHOLD TEST

Warm-up

Initial phase to set the baseline and get your muscles ready for action.

Muscle Stamina

Muscle state 2 and Zone 2 training. Your muscles' ability to endure low-intensity, basic endurance efforts. Breathing is still easy and comfortable because your muscles are well supplied with oxygen.

Muscle Efficiency

Muscle state 3, zone 3 training. Your muscles' ability to sustain medium-intensity, tempo efforts. In this so-called 'grey' training domain, your muscles are very efficient with oxygen.

Muscle Power

Muscle state 4-5 and Zone 4 training. Your muscles' ability to perform high-intensity, sprint efforts. You're mainly using very strong, inefficient energy pathways. You'll be out of breath and need to recover.

Muscle recovery

After effort, your muscles do
not need as much oxygen
anymore, but your heart still
delivers! Oxygen and nutrients
are used to restore your
muscles. The faster, the more,
the better!

Threshold test

Threshold tests for breakpoints in sports performance help coaches and athletes find key moments where performance changes, guiding training and strategy decisions for better results.

Choose tests wisely to find breakpoints. Longer tests stress stamina. They're flexible—do them anywhere, anytime, just follow the protocol. Indoors with Tacx or outdoors, your choice.

POSITIONING

Place sensors

Ensure proper sensor placement on the muscle for accurate readings. Note that not all positions are recognized by threshold calculations. For instance, in cycling, position the sensor on the upper leg muscles—the most engaged during the test. Utilize our patches to secure the sensor in place.

Test guidance

The test view features a 10-second countdown, followed by the test protocol, typically including a 'warm-up,' 'ramp,' and 'cooldown' phase. Follow the instructions meticulously to achieve accurate results through Train.Red. You have the option to halt the test at any time using the stop button.

Analyzing view

Following the test, you receive an overview, with a focus on the thresholds, which is crucial. The "Thresholds" section displays these values. However, the primary objective of the test is to obtain the muscle profile and report. Press "Create Report" to generate the PDF report containing comprehensive muscle data.
